According to the series, a Deck Master only actually joins the field of play when its effect is activated. And, personally, I think it's a bad idea; the series is much different from actually playing, and Deck Masters can, in truth, be very quickly destroyed by today's cards. The duels in the series, however, were planned around this theme, which means that the Deck Masters couldn't simply die, just like that, or it would ruin the episode.
